The Impossible Moment
May 7, 2010
I like the way this photo shows the utter despair of someone experiencing an impossible moment. Of course I look pretty intense here, too.
This shot was taken at an event I did in Switzerland at the ParkHotel Vitznau, located on the shore of Lake Lucerne. It was one of the most luxurious resorts I’ve stayed in, with legendary Swiss service.
My entire family tagged along (Yumi and the kids), and our room was a gorgeous suite that faced the lake. We ate every meal at the hotel restaurant, and the waiter service was unparalleled. The servers carried their dishes with silver-domed lids, to cover the food prior to being served. Several waiters would come to our table, exchange an unspoken signal, and simultaneously remove the lids in a dramatic sweep. Then they tabled the dishes in front of us.
With four people at a table, it was impressive enough, but one night (the night of my show), there were 30 guests seated at one long dining table. And yes, 30 waiters marched in and revealed the food simultaneously to all 30 guests, drawing audible gasps from us all.
The party was hosted by my friend Anne-Sophie Mutter, the extraordinary German violinist. One day, I’ll record the story of my performance that night, since I included two special items that were “once in a lifetime” moments. They were both music related, in honor of Anne-Sophie.
PS: The tuxedo I’m wearing in the top picture is the same as the one shown here, so you can see what it looks like off the hanger.
